ART CONCEPT

Spaces in Between Frank Sabouri’s architectural philosophy, Spaces in Between, explores the dialogue between structure, nature, and human experience. Drawing upon his mentorship under Louis Kahn and Ian McHarg at the University of Pennsylvania, Sabouri envisions architecture as a living rhythm — an intersection of the built and the organic, where boundaries dissolve and meaning emerges through transition. His practice transcends the traditional confines of architecture, embracing the poetics of space as emotion. Whether in urban regeneration projects, ecological communities, or cultural masterplans, Sabouri’s work seeks harmony between landform, memory, and movement. Each design reflects a sensitivity to environmental and cultural context, where sustainability and spirituality coexist. Through Spaces in Between, Sabouri continues to articulate a vision that resonates with Rhythmmm’s interdisciplinary pursuit — where architecture becomes not merely a structure, but a bridge between art, ecology, and the human condition.

ABOUT

Frank Sabouri is an internationally acclaimed architect, urban designer, and researcher with over 36 years of professional experience across the United States (Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, New York, Connecticut, and New Jersey), as well as Iran, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and China. A former student and apprentice of Louis Kahn and Ian McHarg at the University of Pennsylvania, Sabouri earned master’s degrees in Architecture, City Planning, and Urban Design. His projects span sustainable architecture, urban redevelopment and regeneration, waterfront planning, campus and landform design, and ecological urbanism. In collaboration with international Chinese firms, he has led major works in Shanghai, Tianjin, Guiyang, Beijing, Chongqing, Kunming, Hainan, and Changsha, developing innovative concepts for sustainable new communities, resort and sports complexes, and culturally sensitive environments. Sabouri has contributed to key international projects such as the Urban Design Guidelines for Downtown Jebel Ali (Dubai), Housing and Urban Code for Al Wasl New Towns (Saudi Arabia), and the Souq Al Kuwait Master Plan. He also designed Academic Villages in Egypt, sponsored by the World Bank, envisioning self-contained, sustainable educational communities integrating smart technologies and local heritage. He later served as Architecture and Planning Consultant with the World Bank in Washington, D.C., and as Senior Vice President of BMP International, a subsidiary of Bouygues Construction (France), focusing on ecological urbanism in Shanghai. Sabouri has lectured internationally, invited by organizations including the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and The National Arts Club in New York, and has presented in Portugal, the UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain, and China. Currently, he serves as Principal and Director of Design at a New Jersey firm recognized for award-winning residential, civic, and educational projects across the U.S. In December, he will present his lecture “Spaces in Between: Architecture and the Arts” at three universities in China — continuing his lifelong inquiry into how architecture can serve as a dialogue between civilization, environment, and art.
